SOUTH Petherton Bowling Club played Castle Cary in the second round of the Wessex League Knock Out Cup.

As mentioned before this competition is played by two teams at home and two teams away.

Although each club won one game at home and one away, Castle Cary came out the overall winners by just four shots. Petherton wish them every success in the future rounds.

On Tuesday, June 30, the club ended the month with success in the Wessex Friendly League when they visited Merriott.

On a very humid night they managed to win on three rinks, losing on just the one and by an overall score of 15. After the match they were entertained to a marvellous supper in Merriott’s new and splendid clubhouse.

July started off with a heatwave during which the club entertained Bridport in a five-rink friendly match.

Despite feeling like grease blobs everyone had a most enjoyable afternoon and Petherton won on three rinks and lost on two, but were beaten overall by four shots.

On Thursday, July 2, the Petherton ladies visited Axminster for a two-rink friendly match. Playing on the synthetic green the ladies did very well winning on one rink and losing on one, they did unfortunately lose overall by three shots.

Petherton visited Somerton on July 3 in the first round of the Wedmore Plate.

Although they normally have a pretty good record against them they once again reverted to the old form of winning on two rinks and losing on two, but losing overall by eight shots.

The club held its annual drive and barbecue on July 4. The weather was fine and a most enjoyable time was had by all.

The afternoon triples drive, organised by Charlie Reynard, was most successful with the unusual result being a men's win by Reg Chater and the women's by his wife Doreen.

An excellent barbecue was held in the evening with Martin Cornelius, under the supervision of Pat Beckey being the chefs for the day.

The day was also used to launch the new club shirts which will come into full use in the 2010 season.

■ CHARD Bowling Club played Branksome Park, Poole, at home in a friendly lawn green bowls match on Sunday, July 5.

Under changeable and sometimes damp skies, all six rinks were in use.

The final score was 133 shots to Branksome Park and 98 shots to Chard.

Chard's short mat teams recently played Odcombe and drew all three games but lost overall on shots.

On Thursday evenings the club holds a ‘roll up’ where members of the public may come and try their hand. Dress is informal. Play starts at 6.30pm so be there for 6.15pm. Everyone is welcom.

On Monday, June 29, Chard played away to Crewkerne in the Wessex Friendly Mixed League.

It was a scorching hot day and Chard lost 80 shots to Crewkerne's 84.

Scores: The teams were skipped by D Hall 18 shots to 22, R Genge 16 shots to 33, M Lancelott 27 shots to 6 and S Fowler 19 shots to 23.

On Wednesday, July 1, on another sizzling day, Chard played at home in a friendly match against Westlands, who won 73 shots to Chard's 71.

■ CHARDSTOCK Bowling Club enjoyed a home evening match against Donyatt on July 1and it was Chardstock who found themselves in good form.

The 4 Triples game resulted in a 3 to 1 rink, and an overall win for the home team by 87– 49 shots.

Scores: Chardstock (Skips only): M. Rogers lost 16- 18, P. Compton won 29 -11, J. Rolph won 21 – 5, and M. Toms won 21 – 15.

On Saturday, July 4, a five rink mixed match at home to Ottery St Mary ended in a win for the away team by 86 -121 shots, with Chardstock only winning on 1 rink.

Rogers lost 17-27 and P. Compton lost 15 – 33.

The annual club competition for the Anniversary Cup was competed for on Sunday, July 5. Members took part in a 4 Triples and 18 end Round Robin Tournament.

Tucker (Skip). Runners up were R. Wines, A.

Sebright, and M. Rogers (Skip).

■ DONYATT Bowling Club played the same club twice during the past week.

Wednesday, July 1, saw the men play Chardstock in a triples match and suffered a bit of a hiding losing by 38 shots overall on the four rinks.

It was a glorious evening up there in a beautiful location and the sun shining from start to finish, a very enjoyable game in very good company.

The second game was the Ladies taking on the Chardstock Ladies at Donyatt this time, in a three rink triples match and completely reversing the result of the men’s game. The game was on Thursday, July 2. The game started with a little light rain which soon stopped and it was a very hot humid afternoon but never the less the Ladies of both teams enjoyed the game to the full.

Thursday evening saw the men play a three rink triples game in county league, this was an away match at Burnham on Sea, Burnham B C won on two rinks out of the three.

Scores: One rink Donyatt won 20—19, J Deag, D Bassett & R Parkin, the second rink lost 21—7, A Williams, P Brown & P Bromfield and the 3rd rink lost 23—17. T Simpson, G Berry & R Russell. So Donyatt gained two points and ten went to Burnham.

Sunday, July 5, the club was busy again — this time in a four rink mixed rinks playing Lyme Regis at Donyatt which ended in a 18-shot defeat for the home club.
