Counties 3 Somerset South: Chard 2nds 27-12 Wiveliscombe 2nds

Chard 2nd xv finished their league programme with this very good win against Wiveliscombe in what was a very entertaining game watched by a good sized crowd swelled by a large contingent of loud and happy visiting supporters!

Wivey started well and took an early 5pts lead with an excellent but unconverted try from Paul Gridley.

However, Chard got back into the game very quickly and levelled things up when Scott Johnson scored from a well organised catch and drive from a lineout.

In fact, although the visitors played well, they just could not compete in the lineouts with a very organised Chard side and Johnson would go on and get two more very similar tries before the half ended.

Billy Vernon converted one of them  as well as goaling a penalty kick and Chard  reached the break leading 20pts to 5pts.

In general play Chard scrum half Will Draper had a useful game as did fly half Sam Mouland who kicked intelligently and effectively throughout the game.

In the 2nd half play was rather more even but Chard got an extra  point when 2nd row forward Tristian Wootten powered over for Chard’s 4th and bonus point try which was converted by Vernon.

The visitors finished the game as they had started by scoring a splendid try after a fine break through the Chard midfield by Reece Hale who also  got the touch down. Ben Luxton added the extras.

A good game with the outstanding player on the pitch being Scott Johnson.

The result means that Chard finished third in the league.

Cup competitions come to the fore now that the league programme has ended.

Chard 1st xv will play at Home to Frome 1st xv next Saturday  April 1st with the game kicking off at 2pm.
