MP David Laws met with local residents in South Petherton on Thursday to receive a petition calling on RBS/NatWest to keep the branch their open.

It follows a recent announcement that they plan to close the branch from January 2015.

Since then, residents and businesses have expressed their dismay at the planned closure, and a petition against the proposal attracted over 900 signatures.

Mr Laws said: “I strongly support the campaign to keep open the NatWest branch in South Petherton.

“This branch appears to be very well used, and I do not understand why the bank wants to close it.

“Many people in South Petherton and the surrounding area have told me how angry they are about these planned changes - particularly as some people were apparently told that they could use the South Petherton branch when the Martock branch was closed down.

“I have written to the bank's Chief Executive calling for a re-think and requesting a meeting with senior managers to discuss this matter.

“I urge anyone who is concerned about this planned closure to contact me, so that I have as much support as possible for the campaign and as much detail as possible of how the planned closure would impact on local residents and local businesses.”
