A NEW letter-writing venture is coming soon in Ilminster.

The Cafe at the Arts Club in Ilminster will play host to the Letter Writing Club.

The organisers said that during Covid times, many people wrote to friends and families because they could not visit them and people sent cards to bring a little cheer to others.

One of them said: “Letters are a return to a mindful, slow, and relaxing form of communication and the direct antithesis to instant, digital exchanges which disappear into thin air.

“A letter can be held in the hand, mulled over, and read again and again. It means someone has taken the time and effort to put words onto paper whilst thinking about you.

“Letters bring a warm feeling with them; a feeling of being cherished. For some folk who are housebound, lonely, or ill, letters are a lifeline.

“Writing letters collectively can be a fun experience - a time to exchange ideas, chat about letter content, penfriends from the past and at the same time, writing to bring joy to someone else.

“In a club, members can exchange fancy writing papers, stickers and small pictures to decorate letters, perhaps even get creative and decorate the letter themselves.

“Members can write to their friends or family members, to a penfriend overseas, or write to the lonely, housebound or cancer patients organised by such charities as 'Give a few words' and 'From me to you'.

“They can even send cheery cards and postcard scenes to other Letter Writing clubs around the country. The possibilities are endless.”

The Cafe at the Arts Club in Ilminster will play host to a new Letter Writing Club on Wednesday, March 29 at 1.45pm.
