A BIG clean up was held in Chard as a group of volunteers to the streets for a litter pick.

The community action led event was organised by Sustainable Chard on June 18.

The volunteers started at all the main roads leading into Chard, before meeting in the centre of town to show the amount collected.

All rubbish was then sorted for recycling by Tim Eggins who arranged the litter picking event with Lynsey Arscott.

Tim Eggins from Sustainable Chard said: “This is the fifth litter pick we have done. It was extremely hot and we enjoyed the cold drinks at the end.

“We try and have talks and activities once a month. We have a talk on fracking which should be good as the town council declared us Frack free last week.

“We are going to Feast in Ilminster for a group meal in July, and we have been active for two years and most events are free to attend. Our next big one will be Earth Hour Chard next March.”

Cllr Amanda Broom said “Despite starting early, the hot temperatures soon made picking up chewing gum interesting. The biggest eye opener was the amount of cigarette ends thrown on the streets, in gutters & in our lovely streams which head to the English Channel & the Bristol Channel.”
