A NEW board charting 1,000 years of Ilminster’s history has been unveiled by Rotarians, school children and councillors.

The display has been in the making for almost three years and is now on show at the old bank building near Ilminster Co-op.

It was unveiled at a small ceremony last Tuesday, having been organised by the town’s Rotary club, with more than 100 people attending.

The board was the result of a bequest from past-president John Storey of the Rotary Club of Ilminster.

Tony Walker, councillor and Rotarian, said: “The club wanted something that would be a lasting tribute to John and of value and interest to the people and town of Ilminster and so we came up with the idea of a board depicting Ilminster – 1,000 years of history.

“I found creating the board a challenge. I had to do a lot of research, verifying with some help and then reducing the many events and people connected with Ilminster to a level that would fit on the board. We then also had to find a suitable location.”
