A HASELBURY Plucknett man, who allegedly collided with an oncoming vehicle and then panicked and ran away from the scene, denied a careless driving charge when he appeared in court.

Matthew Steven Nickerson was said to have pulled out into the path of the car on a corner of Lower Severalls in Crewkerne, failed to stop and then fled the scene.

The 29-year-old defendant, of North Street, pleaded not guilty to driving a VW Golf without due care and attention on July 15. But he admitted being the driver of a car involved in an accident and caused damage to another vehicle and that he failed to stop and give his details, when he appeared before Somerset Magistrates.

Defending solicitor Greg Peters said that his client maintained that his driving did not fall below the standard required in law.

Nickerson was released on unconditional bail after the case was adjourned until December 5.
