TWO people attempted to steal a cash machine from a Waitrose store on New Year's Day, before fleeing the scene empty handed.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the ATM attack in Crewkerne on Friday afternoon (January 1).

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police said: "A man, wearing dark clothing, smashed a window to gain access to a cash machine at Waitrose before tying a wire rope around it.

"A second person then attempted to pull the ATM out of the store using a vehicle.

"The attack, which took place at 5.15pm, was unsuccessful and no cash was stolen."

A Waitrose spokesperson added: "We have passed on the CCTV footage of the incident and are continuing to support the police with their investigation."
