A ‘WELCOME to Chard’ stone has recently been installed in the town centre.

This was a new addition to the Chard gateway project was erected by contractors at the junction between Fore Street and Silver Street.

This project was funded by Historic England money and has paid for the regeneration of the area to include benches, flower beds and a ‘Welcome to Chard’ stone.

A designated “High Street Heritage Action Zone” (HSHAZ), Chard’s historic centre has been undergoing a host of architectural and visual improvements over the past four years, thanks to £1million of ring-fenced government high streets funding from Historic England.

With enhancements to the town’s public spaces completed in February this year, the project is nearing completion of a major revitalisation programme, unlocking Chard’s potential as a unique place to live, work and visit.

Cllr Jason Baker said: “The regeneration of Chard’s town centre showcases the importance of investing in our unique heritage.

“The successful completion of Chard’s public realm works is already delivering benefits, improved accessibility and connectivity, a vibrant, attractive, safer environment for residents, businesses and visitors, as well as a clear sense of civic pride in the history and character of the town.

“The Chard stone is one of the final pieces of work along with the replacement of the tree that was unfortunately vandalised in Holyrood Street.

“There are a few small jobs left to do around the trees in the town centre which will take place next month.”

Back in December, a spokesperson for Chard Town Council said the cost of the installation was £4,100 but the authority was “trying to bring it down”.

The stone’s original size will have to be reduced so it can be placed at the agreed location.

The Chard and Ilminster News contacted the town council to ask what the final cost was.
