CHARD Rugby Club's First XV had their game postponed at the weekend due to a water logged pitch.

Fair enough too as the wet weather and flooding hit South Somerset the worst last week.

On Saturday (December 9) morning, the club said: "Due to the enormous amount of rain over the last week and last night, the pitch is completely waterlogged with a lot of standing water which means unfortunately our 1st XV fixture is postponed!"

Burnham-on-Sea RFC were due to play at Essex Close in what would have been a bottom of the table clash.

It was seen as a winnable game for both teams but with the home crowd advantage, Chard would have felt like it was a game for the taking.

Currently, Chard are above Burnham in the Regional 2 Tribute South West by just three league points.

Both sides have played eleven games and have won two, losing the other nine. However Chard have 14 league points after picking up some extra bonus points in their defeats.

On recent form though, Chard are on a three game losing run which they will now look to turn around next weekend.

They are set to travel to Wellington RFC on Saturday, December 16 in what will be the final game of 2023.

Wellington currently sit in eighth place and are in a better run of form than Chard so it will be another difficult battle.

In other news at the club, The Wing Commanders (Chard RFC Seconds) fought out a 17-17 draw against Wellington RFC Seconds at the weekend.

The match played at the Athletic Ground in Wellington saw two evenly matched sides leave with the spoils shared.

Currently the Wing Commanders sit in eighth place in the Counties 3 Tribute Somerset South.

They have had a mixed season so far, winning five, drawing one and losing six of their opening 12 fixtures.

They host Burnham-on-Sea Seconds in their final game of 2023 this weekend at Essex Close.

Finally, the Chard RFC Colts are on the search for more players going into 2024.

The club said: "Are you between 16 & 18 years old? In 6th form or an apprenticeship?

"Our Colts are always looking to recruit new players so come and join our thriving squad!"

The group train on Thursday nights at 6.45pm at the Henhayes Centre in Chard.

"Come and be part of a positive, forward thinking rugby club with excellent coaching and facilities," the club added.
