A CHARD man has been sent to Taunton Crown Court to stand trial after being arrested over an allegation of wounding.

Liudas Steponavicius was brought before Somerset Magistrates, sitting at Yeovil, charged with the offence which is alleged to have taken place on March 21.

The 30-year-old defendant, of Holyrood Street, was alleged to have unlawfully and maliciously wounded Donatas Rinkauskas with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

He did not enter a plea and the magistrates said the offence was so serious that it had to be sent to the crown court to be dealt with.

They adjourned the case until April 23 when Steponavicius must appear before a pre trial hearing at Taunton.

The Bench refused an application for the defendant to be released on bail and directed that he must be remanded in custody until his next appearance.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that Steponavicius was arrested following reports of a stabbing at a flat in Holyrood Street.

A man was taken to hospital but was not in a serious condition.
