FIREFIGHTERS battled to stop a wheelie bin fire spreading to a home.

Crews were called to the incident in Victoria Place, Victoria Avenue, Chard, at 4.43pm today (Friday).

When firefighters on a fire engine from Chard arrived on the scene they requested a second appliance as the fire had spread through the air brick and into the cavity wall of an adjacent property.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews got to work with one hose reel jet and a thermal imaging camera, while the building was evacuated.

"At 5.18pm, crews requested the assistance of a further two appliances, sent from Crewkerne and Taunton, and shortly after, the aerial ladder platform, sent from Yeovil.

"Crews removed bricks from the outside of the building to gain access to the cavity, and also checked each floor and loft internally with thermal imaging cameras.

"The snake eye flexi camera was also then requested, which was mobilised from Taunton on the rescue tender."

The fire, which was accidental, was confirmed to be out by 7.10pm.
