EVERY week new families visit Ferne Animal Sanctuary near Chard looking for a furry new friend.

Frequently, after going through the adoption process, they leave proud and excited with a new kitten in hand.

However, the sanctuary’s more middle aged cats are being passed over again and again.

Seven felines in particular have been passed up for adoption repeatedly and their stay in Chard seems to be never-ending.

Arnold, Logan, Kitty, Marley, Ernie, Ollie and Alan are now long-term residents at Ferne Animal Sanctuary and are looking for loving new homes.

The sanctuary has nearly reached the time of year that staff refer to as ‘kitten season’ where younger, fluffier, cuter cats are picked up more frequently.

Tara Nirula, rehoming manager at Ferne, said: “They are mature, calm and very loving, so just coming into their prime.

“However, at some stage in their lives they have been unwanted or abandoned, so trust is an issue and they will need experienced and patient owners. Once that trust is gained you will have a friend for life.”

A spokesman for Ferne Animal Sanctuary added: “Middle age can be a tricky time for some, as Arnold, Logan, Kitty, Marley, Ernie, Ollie and Alan are finding out.

“With the kitten season nearly upon us, their depression and fear of the future have taken hold, and it can only get worse.

“How will they compete with these younger, more attractive models that everyone seems to fall in love with so quickly?

“Despite their good manners, undemanding ways and expert use of cat flaps, they just don’t seem to get a look in. They don’t even demand your attention with trinkets and toys, instead just calmly reward your love with loyalty, friendship and adoration.

“These seven cats have now been with Ferne for quite some time and it’s important we find them good forever homes soon. Unfortunately for them, older cats don’t adjust well to life in the cattery surrounded by strange cats and missing their home comforts. “ Ferne has been caring for unwanted and abandoned animals for more than 75 years.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary is a registered charity and relies on the support of the public and volunteers to continue its work.
