THE CHARD Beacon is being lit tomorrow evening to mark the start of the Queen's birthday celebrations in the town.

The beacon will be lit at 7.30pm, with the council asking people to meet at around 7pm.

A spokesman for the council said: " There is a long and unbroken tradition in our country of celebrating Royal jubilees, weddings, coronations and special birthdays with the lighting of beacons – on top of mountains, churches and battlements, on town and village greens, farms, country parks and estates, and along the beaches surrounding our shores.

"There will be a further opportunity to celebrate on Thursday 21st April 2016 in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday.

"Chard will be proudly lighting its beacon situated off Crowshute Link / Mitchell Gardens at 7.30 pm on Thursday, April 21. Everyone is welcome to join us."

Cllr Jenny Kenton, head of the Queen’s Birthday Working Group, said: “There will be hot chocolate and marshmallows available for the children but it would be helpful for numbers if groups contact the town council to say they are coming.”

Councillors and pupils from Holyrood Academy will be running the event.
