A CHARD man who allegedly assaulted another male leaving him with a broken jaw and the loss of a tooth has appeared in court facing an allegation of wounding.

Simon John Wood was said to have approached the male outside a pub in Fore Street, Chard, after having a “run-in” with him earlier that evening.

It was alleged that after pushing him to the ground the victim’s jaw was broken in two places and that he also lost a tooth and had to undergo surgery in hospital.

Wood, 29, Chaffcombe Lane, faced charges of unlawfully and maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm on Tom Stead at Chard on April 4 when he was in the dock before Somerset Magistrates.

The magistrates refused to accept jurisdiction for the case due to the serious injuries sustained by the complainant in the alleged attack and ordered Wood to stand trial at Taunton Crown Court.

They adjourned the matter until July 6 when he must appear before a preliminary hearing at Taunton and in the meantime released him on unconditional bail.
