CREWKERNE student Mitch Wingham got the chance to strut his moves with one of the nation’s most unlikely dancing stars on Friday night . . . former MP Ann Widdecombe.

Ms Widdecombe, a Conservative MP from 1987 to 2010, became a huge star on BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing show because of her comic routines.

She was at Wadham School on Friday to take part in the political radio show Any Questions.

She was joined on the programme, hosted by Jonathan Dimbleby, by Liberal Democrat MP Sir Menzies Campbell, Labour MP David Lammy and New Statesman political editor Medhi Hasan.

The programme, broadcast live from Wadham, saw the panel answer ten questions on topics such as the NHS, prayers at council meetings and who should be the next England football manager.

It was after the show finished that Mitch, president of the the school’s head student team, got his chance to dance the night away.

“We were really excited that Any Questions went out from our school,” he said.

“Meeting the panel members was an added bonus and I got to dance with Ann Widdecombe!”

Wadham head teacher David Derbyshire had approached the BBC about the school hosting an edition of Any Questions as part of its 40th anniversary celebrations.

“Having an interesting group of people addressing the issues of today, broadcast live from the school, seemed a great way to help us celebrate 40 years of education at Wadham,” he said.

The 250-strong audience numbered staff, students, parents and governors of the school, as well as local political party members and show supporters.

Wadham’s business manager, Sheila Taylor, who co-ordinated arrangements for the programme, said: “We really enjoyed the buzz the whole event brought to the school and were delighted that we were able to share this event with the whole community.

“We’d love to see Any Questions here again some time.”
