The future of libraries in Ilminster and South Petherton was discussed this week.

With the cuts due to be taken by Somerset County Council in the months ahead, all library services are under review.

At both the meetings of Ilminster Town Council last Tuesday and South Petherton Parish Council last Monday this review was considered.

Future changes to services could hinge on the nation’s Comprehensive Spending Review due to take place on Wednesday, October 20.

Options being considered include creating community run and community assisted libraries.

A community-run library would be a local alternative to closure, not be funded by the County Council and not part of the council’s library network.

A community-supported library would be funded jointly by a local council or group and the County Council and would remain part of the library network. It would have the option of buying in services above those offered by the County Council.

Ten focus groups in different communities through Somerset have been consulted about their libraries and a report is expected back on these on November 1.
