CHILDREN at Buckland St Mary Primary School reach above-average standards by the time they leave, OFSTED inspectors have found.

The school has been judged as good in its latest report, with inspectors praising the way it develops the pupils academically and personally.

The pupils themselves were lauded for their exemplary behaviour in class and in the playground.

Head teacher Sue English, who joined the school at the beginning of this academic year, said: “We’re delighted with the report – it’s given the school a real buzz. It’s a superb team effort by everyone connected with the school.”

Other findings of the report include:

  • Teaching is nearly always good, with some that is outstanding.
  • Pupils enjoy school – reflected in the friendly and caring atmosphere and pupils’ good attitudes to learning.
  • The curriculum is broad and well balanced while additional activities provide interesting and varied opportunities for learning outside of the school day.
  • Teamwork in the reception class is strong and adults ensure the welfare needs of the children are met well. Teaching assistants make a strong contribution to children’s good personal development and well-being.
  • The head teacher instils ambition and is passionate about whole-school improvement.

Inspectors said the school could make more effective use of assessment information and could further improve the quality of provision in the early years foundation stage.
