FOUR people were taken to hospital after a serious collision on the A303 near Yarcombe yesterday.

Emergency service closed the road for six and a half hours following the incident at the junction of the B3170 shortly after 3pm, which involved a silver Mazda 6, a blue Vauxhall Vectra and a red Volvo 940.

The 50-year-old female driver of the Mazda was removed from her vehicle and airlifted to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with spinal injuries.

A spokesman for Devon and Cornwall Police said her injuries were serious but not life threatening.

The driver of the Vectra was trapped in her car and taken to the RD&E with chest pains, alongside her passenger, an elderly male, who suffered a fractured hip.

The female passenger of the Mazda was also taken to hospital.

The A303 was shut both ways between the Eagle Cross junction, near Buckland St Mary, and Upottery in Devon.

It was eventually re-opened at about 10pm.
