SOMERSET Council has confirmed the A358 near Hatch Beauchamp will remain closed in both directions until the afternoon to allow emergency repairs after “a significant diesel spill”.

Motorists are being warned that the road will be closed in both directions until this afternoon (Thursday, February 15) for emergency repairs and resurfacing.

The works follow a collision yesterday and motorists will need to find alternative routes if planning to travel between Taunton and the Ilminster roundabout.

Police say a Range Rover driver was airlifted to hospital after the collision with a lorry.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital by land ambulance with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

A spokesperson said: “Somerset Council’s Highways Team reacted swiftly to the incident that took place on one of the county’s busiest routes at around 4pm yesterday.

“They immediately put an emergency road closure in place and organised a clear-up following a significant diesel spill.

“The damage caused by the spill meant the team has also had to hastily arrange emergency repair work to a 60m stretch of both lanes. This will take place this morning and into the afternoon.

“The exact time of reopening is not yet known. Please check @Travelsomerset on Facebook and X [Twitter] for the latest updates.”
