AROUND 40,000 people are expected to turn out for this Saturday's Yeovilton Air Day.

The annual spectacular takes place at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton and the theme is Maritime Air.

The roles of the Royal Navy in the 21st Century include protection of sea lanes, intelligence gathering, counter narcotics, delivering humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and, ultimately, war-fighting. Yeovilton based Commando Sea King and Lynx helicopters and Maritime Lynx Squadrons will feature in the extensive flying and static display along with visiting military and civilian aircraft, historic and modern from around the world.

RNAS Yeovilton is home to the Royal Navy's Small Ships' Flights (Lynx) and Commando Helicopter Squadrons.

The Royal Navy Historic Flight also resides at RNAS Yeovilton and their aircraft such as the Sea Hawk and newly restored Swordfish will also be on show.

The culmination of the flying display will be the awesome Commando Assault Demonstration with plenty of pyrotechnics.

The Royal Air Force will be providing the Eurofighter Typhoon - its most up-to-date combat aircraft.

Over the years air day has attracted participants from all over the world. This year the Royal Jordanian Falcons, a mighty US Air Force B-52 bomber and Spanish Navy Harriers have confirmed their attendance.
