POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a 47-year-old woman was headbutted in an assault in Fore Street, Chard.

Police have just revealed that the incident happened at about 11.50pm on Sunday, December 9, at the Phoenix pub.

The woman, who is from Chard, had been drinking in the pub with her grown-up son, who has a physical disability.

The pair were followed from the pub by a man who shouted abuse at the son, then headbutted the woman when she confronted him. She was left with an injury to her right eye.

Officers are keen to hear from anyone who was in the pub on Sunday evening or who was in the area and saw the incident.

A 27-year-old man Chard was arrested in the early hours of Monday on suspicion of assault causing actual bodily harm. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
