ONE Holyrood pupil has topped the class after receiving the top grade for every subject she sat.

Maddie Porter achieved the top grade possible in every subject - grade 9 in Maths, in English Language and in English Literature, seven A*s and a Distinction*.

Students at Holyrood Academy in Chard are again celebrating after a successful results day.

The Chard school's GCSE results which saw 67 per cent of students achieving the key measure of at least a grade 4 (equivalent to the previous A*-C measure) in both Maths and English new style GCSEs.

Of these, 68% achieved the new strong pass grade 5 in both subjects.

Many students exceeded their personal targets achieving some fantastic results. Top performers this year included:

  • Maddie Porter who achieved the top grade possible in every subject (grade 9 in Maths, in English Language and in English Literature, 7 A*s and a Distinction*)
  • Elliot Warner (grade 9 in Maths, 8 in English Language and 7 in English Literature, 6 A*s, 2As and grade B)
  • Gabby Lang (grade 8 in Maths, 9 in English Language and 8 in English Literature, 6 A*s, an A and a Distinction*)

Headteacher Matthew Collins said: "The achievements of all the students has been superb, new government measures take into account the progress made by every student in the year for the Progress 8 score and these are significantly above national thresholds – indicating high levels of success for students of all abilities.

"The results were thoroughly deserved by this group of students and are testament to their attitude and hard work.

"I would also like to thank the teaching staff for the incredible amount of work they have put in to supporting this group of students at a time of significant national change.

"These results are excellent and can only help to further our reputation at a local and regional level."

Daniel Knight got fantastic results in his GCSEs, especially seeing as he didn't even think he would be able to sit them.

Daniel overcame his severe anxiety achieve an A, five Bs, a C and a D, in addition to 4, 5 and 6 grades.

He said: "I am very happy with what I got, especially as there was a point where I thought I would not be able to sit the exams.

"The fact I have got Bs in science makes me really happy, because that means I can go on and do it at sixth form.

"I really want to do forensic science at university."

Oliver Lenthall, pictured above, got 6 As, a B and a distinction*. As well as that, Oliver got two of the new 8 scores, which are similar to an A*, and a 6.

He said: "I am pleased with my maths score, and in English literature I did a bit better than I thought.

"I'm going to Richard Huish to do Chemistry, Biology, Maths and Geography."

Henry Taswell has wanted to be a doctor since he was about 12, and took one step closer to that dream today.

He opened his results to discover he got new 8, 7 and 6 grades, as well as an A*, five As, a B and a C.

Henry said: "I am really pleased, especially with the maths where I got an 8. I was surprised with the English result. I'm happy with that too.

"I am going to be staying at Holyrood to Maths, Chemistry and Biology, and then I want to do medicine at university."
