LAST weekend, Chard 2nd XV had a very comfortable away win against Bridgwater 3rds in Somerset 2 South, writes Glyn Hughes.

Their 86-7 victory leaves them 10th in the table, five points behind Minehead Barbarians 2nds and 18 points clear of 11th-placed Bridgwater.

Unfortunately, the 3rd XV’s scheduled home game against Taunton 3rds (in Somerset 3 South) had to be postponed, once again due to a waterlogged pitch.

The main ground had been deemed unplayable on the Friday and the game was switched to Crewkerne Road, but a pitch inspection on Saturday morning after more heavy rain showed that large areas of this pitch were also under water.

This coming Saturday, Chard’s 1st XV – who had a free weekend over Easter – have a very important away game at Tiverton (ko 3pm).

Chard are in eighth place but only four points ahead of the relegation zone, with Tiverton two points behind in ninth.

With relegation rivals Torquay Athletic at home to already relegated Burnham-on-Sea, Chard will be hoping that their much-improved form in recent weeks continues and they can pick up some precious points to stay clear of danger.

Also on Saturday, the 2nd XV are at home to Tor 2nds, while the 3rds entertain Wincanton.

Both of those matches kick off at 3pm.
