DAY three of Gold Coast 2018 was not the best from a Somerset point of view, but we're still very early on at these Commonwealth Games.

Here's what happened earlier today, and what will be taking place on day four.

Hockey

One goal in each of the second, third and fourth quarters by Malaysia condemned Wales men to a 3-0 defeat in their second group stage match.

Taunton's James Carson came on as substitute for the Welsh, who will look to bounce back tomorrow - though it will be a tough ask, as they take on India (10.30am UK time).

England women, and goalkeeper Maddie Hinch, had today off, but tomorrow sees them back in action - also against India, at 12.30am - as they go in search of a third straight win.

India surprisingly lost to Wales, while England have beaten South Africa and then Wales, but it's still likely to be a tough test for Hinch and her team-mates against the Asian Cup holders.

Lawn bowls

It was the end of the line for Louis Ridout and Sam Tolchard in the men's pairs, as the English duo lost their must-win encounter with New Zealand.

Ridout and Tolchard fought back from 10-5 down to 11-11, only for their opponents to win 14-12 and prevent England making the quarter-finals.

There was better news for Rob Paxton, skipping the England men's triples team, as they beat Wales 17-16.

From 4-0 down and later 14-9 down, Paxton, Jamie Chestney and David Bolt battled back and scored one in the 18th end to clinch it.

That meant that they topped Section A, but it all went wrong for Paxton and co in the quarter-finals, losing 19-18 to Norfolk Island.

A score of five in the 15th end took them into the lead, 17-16, but single points for Norfolk Island in the final two ends levelled it up at 18-18, and they took one in the 19th to knock England out.

Both Paxton and Ridout have the day off tomorrow, having failed to reach the semi-finals of the triples/pairs.

But they'll be looking to rebound on Monday (April 9), when the men's singles and fours events begin.

More highlights

There are four Somerset athletes in the England shooting squad, but none are involved in the events tomorrow - again we're looking at Monday for David Luckman's involvement in the Queen's Prize Pairs.

Instead, the spotlight is on Amber Hill, who is gunning for a medal in the women's skeet final (6.45am).

Elsewhere, English gymnastics star Max Whitlock will be challenging for gold in the men's floor and pommel horse finals (5.30am and 6.20am).

The inaugural women's keirin event takes place in the cycling velodrome (noon), before Siobhan-Marie O'Connor hopes to clinch gold in the women's 200m individual medley (12.20pm).
