THE 2018 Commonwealth Games are well underway, with medals already being won left, right and centre on the first day of competition.

With the event being held on Australia's Gold Coast, much of the sport is taking place overnight as far as the UK is concerned.

Nonetheless, whether you're planning to stay up into the small hours or catch up on what's been happening when you wake up, here's what to look out for on day two.

Hockey

Former King's College pupil (2002-07) Maddie Hinch has already put in one impressive performance for England women at the Games, with the goalkeeper making some superb reaction saves to keep a clean sheet against South Africa.

England won that opening match 2-0 (thanks to goals from Grace Balsdon and Susannah Townsend), and they're back in action tomorrow for a GB derby clash.

They face Wales women at the Gold Coast Hockey Centre, with the match starting at 10.30am UK time.

As for Wales men, they began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Pakistan, with Rupert Shipperley netting for the Welsh.

Ex-Wellington School student James Carson came off the bench to enter the fray after just five minutes, and saw plenty of action as a rolling substitute during the match.

Wales men have a day off tomorrow, returning on Saturday (April 7, 12.30am UK time) against Malaysia.

Lawn bowls

The Somerset bowlers in Australia had mixed results on day one.

There was success for former Taunton Deane/current Ilminster Bowling Club man Rob Paxton, who skipped England to a 24-6 win over Papua New Guinea in the men's triples sectional play (Section A, Round 1).

But Taunton-born Louis Ridout lost his opener in the men's pairs sectional play (Section C, Round 1) alongside Sam Tolchard, 15-13 to the Cook Islands.

Ridout and Tolchard then went on to draw 22-22 with Fiji in Round 2 of the pairs.

Tomorrow sees Paxton - with Jamie Chestney (second) and David Bolt (lead) - take on India in their second triples match, though you'll need to stay up late to watch it, as it starts at midnight UK time.

The trio have a quick turnaround after that, as they then play South Africa at 3am.

There are also two Friday matches for Ridout and Tolchard, again separated by three hours - against Papua New Guinea (7am) and Botswana (10am).

More highlights

We have to wait until Sunday (April 8) for the start of the shooting events - which feature Abbey Ling, Ed Ling, David Luckman and Ellie Seward.

So that's your lot for the Somerset athletes we're focusing on at County Gazette HQ, but of course there's plenty more going on in the Friday schedule.

England have already scooped gold in the men's artistic gymnastics, as Max Whitlock led the team to glory; tomorrow it's the turn of the England women's team.

They'll be challenged for gold by the likes of Australia and Canada, with England scheduled to compete from 10.20am.

Charlie Tanfield (England) and Katie Archibald (Scotland) are among the Brits competing in the track cycling on day two, with the events in the velodrome running from 10.30am through to 12.15pm.

And in the swimming pool, the men's 200m freestyle final will see South Africa's Olympic medallist Chad le Clos (you may recall his dad Bert from London 2012) challenged by England's 2015 world champion James Guy.
