SOUTH Petherton Bowling Club was pleased to entertain Seaton Bowling Club to a four-rink friendly match.

In this most enjoyable game played in the true friendship and, occasionally, fun match Petherton came out winners by three rinks to one and by an overall score of 23.

This game is played at home and away on alternative years and Petherton look forward to visiting them next year.

On Wednesday, Petherton took four rinks to Chardstock for the club’s annual visit to them, unfortunately by the time they had arrived the skies had opened and it was impossible to play any bowls.

But members were then entertained to a most welcome cuppa and sandwiches and all hope the weather will improve for Chardstock’s visit to Petherton on September 15.

Petherton had its final Wessex Friendly League match on Friday, September 4, against Shaftesbury – this was a catch up game from one that had to be cancelled earlier in the season because of rain.

This match was shortened to 18 ends because of failing light, by this time however Petherton were leading on two rinks and with an overall score of 23 this gave them sufficient points to once more win the League.

The following day the club held its first ever finals day, the weather started off very sunny but clouded over. Despite one or two lots of drizzle the day was a success and all matches were completed.

Ladies 4 wood championship: Winner Marilyn Anderson, Runner-up June Bell; Ladies 2 wood championship: Winner Beryl Male, Runner-up Marilyn Anderson.

The hectic week finished on Sunday with a fun day when the members of the local cricket team joined the bowling club members to try their hand at another sport.

Everyone enjoyed themselves and the evening was finished off with a barbecue prepared by the club’s regular chef Pat Beckey ably assisted by Martin Cornelius.
