Ilminster Town's unbeaten season start ended in a frustrating defeat against Ilfracombe Town.

Despite creating numerous chances in their South West Peninsula League match, they were unable to find the net.

Ilminster began brightly, with Josh Phillips' early effort blocked on the line.

They continued to dominate, but the visitors held firm during a goalmouth scramble.

Ilfracombe began to threaten near the half-hour mark, with a free kick just clearing the bar.

Ilminster's on-loan goalkeeper, Harley Wilkinson, made a fine save, but Ilfracombe's Ollie Stevens scored with a header.

Reduced to 10 men after Braeden Symes' sin-bin offence, Ilminster pressed on.

Phillips went close with a well-timed run, but his shot was just off target.

The second half saw Ilfracombe sitting deep and defending resolutely.

Ilminster created half chances, with Jack Steer and Jordy Lovibond both testing the keeper.

Phillips set up Steer, who struck cleanly, only for the keeper to deflect the powerful shot wide with his foot.

Substitute Ed Butcher's strong run set up Phillips for another chance, but his shot was blocked.

In a bid to find an equaliser, manager Jason Behan replaced defensive midfielder Harvey Saunders with Lewis Trusson.

Trusson made a fine run down the right, crossing for Phillips, whose effort was blocked on the line before his rebound was cleared over the bar.

Despite the loss, Ilminster remain in the top three, with players set to return from holidays and injuries.

They face two challenging cup fixtures next, against step five opposition from the league above.

First, they travel to Western Premier League side Street FC in the FA Vase, before hosting Bridgwater United in the Somerset Premier Cup.
