Chard Town 2-4 Congresbury - defeat at home for Robins

Congresbury were the visitors to Zembard Lane on Saturday (March 21).

With only five wins and being close to the bottom of the table they would be looking to take three points back home.

Jordon Clapp, Alex Manley and Ryan Mason were unavailable for Chard.

After a long delay because of an emergency situation not at the football club, the game got underway at 3.45pm.

Playing down the slope Chard were on the attack straight away with James Boyland leading the line.

After 17 minutes it was the young impressive Tom Redwood who laid a perfect ball to Luca Manley on the right. In that position Luca rarely misses and true to form, he put into the top corner.

Congresbury responded and started creating chances, then just before halftime they had a chance to level the score with a penalty. This wasn't to be, as a great save by Jason Contreras denied them.

At half time, the score was 1-0 to Chard.

With only a narrow lead playing up the slope, Chard faced an onslaught by Congresbury but they couldn't break through. 

On 57 minutes a free kick on the right by Drew Sloan was perfectly met by the head of Brad Pitman to give Chard Town a 2-0 lead.

This was short lived minutes later as Congresbury were awarded another penalty. This one was put away, making the score 2-1 to Chard.

This buoyed the Congresbury players so fresh legs were brought on, James Boyland was replaced by Joe Gummer and Tom Redwood replaced by Cruz Baker.

This plan didn't work and in the last 10 crazy minutes Congresbury got an equaliser with five minutes left of the game then on the last minute of normal time scored again. 2-3

Into added time, Chard were piling forward to get the equaliser, even Jason Contreras was on the halfway line, Congresbury broke free Jason tried to intercept, but to no avail and Congresbury put the ball into an empty net.

A spokesman for the club said: “It was disappointing to lose at home with a great crowd in attendance, but it's all about desire and taking your chances.

“Tom Redwood, one of the young Robins, had a great game working hard all afternoon and had an assist. He was awarded the player of the match.”

On Saturday, March 28, it is Non-League Day and Chard Town have a double header. The reserves are in the Bill Slee Cup against Alphington Secoonds. Kick off is 1.30pm at Holyrood Academy. Then Nailsea are the visitors to Zembard Lane for the first team. Kick off is 3pm.
