Somerset Senior Cup: Chard Town 1-0 Mendip Broadwalk
IT was a tough draw to face a strong football club in Mendip Broadwalk in round 3 of the Somerset Senior Cup for Chard Town.
After remembering the fallen with a minutes silence and the attendance of the local branch of the Royal British Legion we got underway.
Playing down the slope we played some great football and took the game to Mendip from the off.
After only four minutes a great ball landed at the feet of Max Westlake who smashed the ball into the top corner, with the goalie not having any chance of stopping it.
On the 20 minute mark, Mendip settled and started to knock the ball about but with Tim Legg in fine form he marshalled the defenders around him and stood firm. One shot that got through was superbly saved by Jason Contreras in goal.
However the score remained 1-0 at the break in favour of the Robins as they looked a second half up the slope.
Facing up the slope is always daunting, with a good team like Mendip that pass the ball around so quickly it was going to be a busy 45 minutes.
Mendip attempted to use the switch in ends to grab an equaliser early in the half.
The visitors pushed higher and higher up the pitch and were causing problems early in the half.
Again the defence of Chard stood firm and the midfield of Oliver Board and Alex Manley caused plenty of problems and we had a couple of chances ourselves to get the second goal.
As 45m elapsed the referee signalled for five minutes extra time added which seemed a lifetime for the Chard players.
Despite the conditions and the importance of the game the referee handled the game in a great manner.
All in all it was a solid win for Chard who can now prepare for the next round of the competition.
After the match, the club said: "Many thanks to everyone involved yesterday and we wish Mendip Broadwalk all the best wishes for the rest of the season and we will see them again soon."
Chard's next game is away at Chilcompton Sports in the Uhlsport Premier and First Division Cup and the next home game is on the 25th November v Somerton Town KO 2pm
