Combe Colts 5-2 Merriot Saints
IN a weekend where not much football happened elsewhere in South Somerset, the Combe St Nicholas Colts defeated Merriot Saints at Slade’s Cross.
In blustery but dry conditions, the Colts won the toss, electing to play down the slope, starting brightly, settling down well, some good play down the left from Ollie Davey resulted in Mckenzie Clarke scoring.
They went 2-0 up when James Gilbert curled a beauty into the corner, which bamboozled the keeper and nestled in the net.
Before half time, Craig Whittingham slotted a penalty to make it 3-0 to Combe.
In the second period, Merriot pulled a goal back but Combe never dropped their heads, with Leon Gibson scoring soon after kick off.
Whittingham scored a chip soon after to make it 5-1 and survived an onslaught from the Saints afterwards, only conceding a late goal to finish at 5-2.
Manager Simon Mason said: "Considering we had a few new faces in the side, the team played really well, gelling together and out muscling a good Merriot team.
"Also, a very good morale booster to get our first win of the season, hopefully it'll be a springboard to further success."
