Uhlsport Somerset Premier Division: Wells City Reserves 2-1 Ilminster Town
ILMINSTER Town who have shown good form of late by going unbeaten for three matches, lost in controversial fashion when in the 70th minute with the score at 1-1 skipper Lee Sweet under pressure from the Wells striker fell and the ball ended up back in the arms of his goalkeeper Jack Rutter.
The referee gave an indirect free kick six yards out from the goal line for a back pass, that brought a mass protest from the team. With all the defenders back on the goal line, the initial shot was blocked, as well as the follow up then from the third attempt Wells got lucky to squeeze the ball through the crowed area into the goal to make it 2-1.
As has been a common problem for the Blues, yet again an early goal gave Wells the advantage as Ilminster switched off and the home side went 1-0 up in the 10th minute.
After playing so well last week the team just failed to really get going, it was top scorer Lewis Trusson who once again got his side back into the match as he beat two defenders before cutting inside and finding the bottom corner with a great strike on the half hour.
Ilminster more than matched Wells for the rest of the half and until the indirect free kick in the second half never looked in any trouble without really threatening themselves, a draw would have been a fair result.
George Hayward had a good first half in the midfield but faded in the second due to lack of matches.
Wells are a good side and will no doubt finish in the top five, the team can count themselves unlucky to lose and certainly looked on the same level.
The defeat takes the Blues into the bottom three for the first time this season.
