Watchet Town 2 Ilminster Town 0

With a very strong wind coming in from the sea, both sides found it very difficult to play football as the ball, when in the air, always came back to where it had come from.

The Blues were missing skipper Kris Hastings and play maker Will Spurway from their starting line up and brought in Joe Osborne who has been playing well in the Reserves and Charlie Rutter.

Both sides struggled to get a foot hold in the conditions, Lee Sweet managed better than most and had one decent effort on goal in a drab first half.

With the score 0-0 at half time both sides would have been happy with a point, but it was Watchet who managed to break the deadlock on the hour mark with a well worked goal. Shay Allen made a good save from the first effort with the loose ball bouncing off the leg of Haydn Smith presenting an easy tap in for Ian Lowe to make it 1-0.

With very difficult conditions to chase the game, Osborne had a couple of good efforts from outside the box as Ilminster looked to get back level on terms, there were a couple more half chances towards the end of the match and with gaps at the back Watchet broke away at the end and made it 2-0 when Aaron Deeks scored with the very last kick of the match.

One bonus for Ilminster was the return of talented young goalkeeper Shay Allen who has returned to his local club after spells at a higher level with Shirehampton, Wellington and Axminster Town. With time very much on his side the future certainly looks bright for the eighteen-year-old, he looked very confident and assured throughout the ninety minutes despite the difficult conditions.

It was one of those matches where the Blues never looked like scoring if they stayed out all night and with Watchet winning, they move out of the relegation places leap frogging Ilminster who slip into the bottom two.

With matches in hand on all the sides around them, it’s not the end of the world and the frustration of last week's postponement after Stockwood Green never fulfilled the fixture certainly hurt with the chance of three much needed points lost.

Joe Osborne, on his senior debut, took the man of the match reward for his effort and commitment to the cause throughout the match.
