West of England Premier League
Premier 2 Bristol/Somerset
Ilminster 225-4 beat Shapwick & Polden 220 by 6 wkts

SAM Spurway hit a half century as Ilminster recorded their first West of England Premier League win of the season on Saturday.

Visitors Shapwick won the toss and elected to bat and it needed a run out to bring about a breakthrough, Sam Edmunds falling for 19 after an opening stand of 55.

That brought about a flurry of wickets, all for James Thompson (3-27 from 10), as the visitors slipped to 90-4.

John Stratton (33) and Will Mason (46) staged a recovery but, once they fell, Shapwick slipped from 164-4 to 191-9 as Harry Montacute (3-53) and Charlie Vickery (2-37) were among the wickets.

Sam Grinter took the final wicket as Shapwick were bowled out for 220, and Ilminster's reply got off to a fine start.

Louis Kraucamp (41) and Jonny Warry (32) added 80 for the opening wicket and, though both fell in quick succession, Vickery and Spurway took up the mantle.

Vickery made a patient 33 from 97 balls, with Spurway more brisk in his 57 from 62 (11 fours), to take Ilminster to the brink of victory.

Both batsmen fell before the job was complete, but Keelan Ashby (21no) and Jon Hurford (17no) had little difficulty in seeing the hosts over the line in the 46th over.

On Saturday, Ilminster are looking forward to a local derby at North Perrott, the team that they knocked out of the Baker Cup last Monday with a six-run victory.
