CHARD Hockey Club’s men’s and ladies 1sts both suffered heavy losses on Saturday.

The ladies travelled to Winscombe 2nds for their first Sedgemoor Division 1 match of 2019, and were beaten 3-0 by the side sitting in third.

It leaves Chard third from bottom ahead of this Saturday’s home match with basement side Burnham-on-Sea (12.30pm start).

The men’s 1sts slipped to second from bottom in the Central 2 standings, leapfrogged by Swindon A after losing 4-1 to them.

This Saturday sees Chard host seventh-placed Keynsham (2pm).

There was better news for Chard A, who won their first match of the season, 4-1 over Minehead A in South East 1.

Still eight points from safety, they visit third-placed East Devon A this Saturday (2pm).

Chard B, meanwhile, lost 4-3 at home to South East 2 table-toppers North Devon A; they go to Yeovil & Sherborne B next (2.30pm).

Weymouth Sunday Ladies 0, Chard Sunday Ladies 4

CHARD travelled to sunny Weymouth with a youthful team and dominated from the start.

Superb keeping from Weymouth’s goalie kept the score even until well into the first half, but Heidi Warren broke the deadlock after dribbling into the D.

Weymouth had a few breaks but these were well defended by Sue Stoker and Frankie Woodland, and stand-in keeper Charlie Carver-Bale.

The second half saw much of the same, with midfielders Julie Saxby, Amelia Dare, Heidi Warren and Evie Trafford supporting and driving through to the forwards.

Sophie Gibbons and Lorna Warren kept good width at the front and Chard’s many attacks put huge pressure on the opposition. This eventually paid off and Warren got her second goal, and Crocus Douglass and Ros Clemmans sealed the deal with two more.

CHARD Hockey Club Under-10s travelled to Shepton Mallet on Sunday for a junior tournament.

Two mixed sides played, and the first won three, drew two and lost one – goals came from Reuben Willis, Oli Wells and Dexter Druce.

The second team are less experienced but one could not fault their effort; their heads did not drop.

Tabitha Thompson, Sam Johnson-Jones and Oscar Wadey all played well.
