CHARD men’s 1st XI fell short in their survival battle, finishing second bottom, but they ended their season on a high with victory at home to Plymouth Marjon 3rds.

They finish up on 14 points, three off third-bottom Bodmin, and will look to bounce back next season.

Yeovil & Sherborne B 0, Chard A 4

THERE was better news for Chard A, who secured promotion with a 4-0 win at Yeovil & Sherborne B on Saturday.

They finish second behind East Devon C, and six points clear of ECV Hornets B after the third-placed side lost to West Dorset A.

East Devon C 5, Chard B 0

CHARD played their re-arranged last fixture at league champions East Devon, the home side fielding a number of veterans complemented by some good youth players.

Chard started well, repelling the advances of the home side, and creating the best chance when a goalbound shot was saved.

Rollo Squires’ follow-up was saved again and James Float’s shot went narrowly wide.

Shortly afterwards, Chard lost two of their mature players and this left them having to reshuffle their team, with East Devon scoring shortly afterwards.

They then hit the post from a penalty stroke but the home side finished the half with another goal.

East Devon stretched Chard and managed to score three more goals.

But Chard had two late penalty corners from which they were unfortunate not to score, as Steve Dare’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar.

Chard finish the season in a respectable sixth spot which is a good result as, unlike many of the teams in the league, they had a mix of youth and experience.

Chard B: Hibbard, Dare, Mooney, Lewis, Cheffey, T Float, J Float, Squire, D Cooper, B Cooper, Jones, Bromfield.
