HEAVY showers on Bank Holiday Monday saw a small field competing for the Bader Cup, a National mixed greensome Stableford competition with the winners able to go through to regional finals.

Despite the weather conditions it was a closely fought game with Samantha Barry and Paul Kelly winning on countback from Janet Stone and Steve Southgate with 40 points. Last year's winners, Beth Stubbs and George Willerton, came third on countback from Shirley and Cliff Medcraff with 39pts.

The Ladies section played the Spring Shield on May 10 in anything but spring-like conditions. Heavy rain proved the downfall of many with N/R being a popular score. The winner was June Hutchings with a net 73, and with the lowest gross of 88. Runner-up was Janet Stone with net 76.

Earlier in the month, the Somerset Past Captains Society played in a Inter County match against Berkshire at Downshire Golf Club, Wokingham. Bobbie Barnett, past captain of Windwhistle Ladies section, was the representative in the competition when Somerset emerged the winners. Well done to Bobbie to be in the winning team.

WINDWHISTLE Seniors took on the might of Weymouth's number one team away at Weymouth on May 9, and came away with a very encouraging draw at 3-3. Of the three matches lost, two of them were lost on the 18th hole.

Results: Bert Robinson & Nick George lost to Baker & Donovan by one hole; Ray Morris & Mick Aldridge beat Young & Carter 3&2; Fred Oliver & Ken Freeman beat Thompson & Rapier 3&2; Mike Johnson & Ian Fielder lost to McCullough & Edgar 6&4; Bill Phillips & Stuart Pope lost to Saunders & Evans by one hole; Brian Anderson & Geoff Dean beat Cocherill & Dennis 3&1.

On May 11, the Seniors held their second medal event of the year. A field of 28 contestants took part in conditions which favoured the early starters. Late morning saw weather conditions more in keeping with late November, and the lashing wind and rain meant that later scores were very high.

Division 1 (handicap 0 - 18): 1 Brian McCarthy, net 72, 2 Tony Church, net 75, 3 Cliff Medcraff, net 77; Division 2 (handicap 19 - 28): 1 Nick George, net 80 (on countback), 2 Brian Rideout, net 80, 3 Fred Oliver, net 81.

Next Friday, the Seniors travel to the Devon venue of Teign Valley, seeking a rare win over the 'Teignagers'.
