PEOPLE across Somerset are being warned to expect some thunderstorms and torrential rains today (Wednesday, August 17).

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for possible thunderstorms in the county and the South West and South East between around 10am and 8pm.

Chard & Ilminster News:

It is likely to be a mostly cloudy day with downpours and thunderstorms possible, according to the forecast.

The temperature will peak at around 22degs C and it's likely to be less humid than recent days.

But the big threat comes from thunderstorms that could potentially bring disruption.

The Met Office has put us on alert to expect:

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds;
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life;
  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services;
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures;
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
