McDonald's often runs promotions that connect its Happy Meals with soon-to-be-released films, and that's no different now with The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

In a statement, McDonald's said: "To celebrate The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming to the big screen, McDonald’s welcomes Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach 👑 and more to the latest Happy Meal® promotion.

"Featuring the popular Nintendo characters, there are nine unique fan-favourite toys to collect in a limited-edition Happy Meal box until 7th February."

The toys in the Happy Meals are cardboard figures that include Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach as well as various characters in karts, such as Toad, Donkey Kong and Cranky Kong.

However, the news that the toys are not plastic figures in the UK - which they are in the U.S. - seems to have upset some people who were anticipating them.

One Twitter user shared: "McDonald's The Super Mario Bros. Movie figures. No plastic toys here."

Another asked: "Yo, Maccies. Why do you hate the UK? Americans get Mario Happy Meal Toys, and the UK gets cardboard. What’s the deal there?"

Meanwhile, another person tagged McDonald's asking: "Super Mario Happy Meals are out now, why is it that USA get 8 plastic toys to collect and the UK gets 4 naff cardboard “toys”."

Meanwhile, another asked: "Yo, Maccies. Why do you hate the UK? Americans get Mario Happy Meal Toys, and the UK gets cardboard. What’s the deal there?"

The Scottish games journalist Chris Scullion wrote: "Torn between a strong dislike for McDonald’s s**** cardboard ‘toys’ and happiness in getting our first piece of Mario Movie merch".

The limited edition Happy Meal boxes are available in McDonald's now until Tuesday, February 7.
