A stone-throwing incident that injured two people on a bus could have had “horrendous” consequences, police have warned.

A 73A Stagecoach bus was travelling through Broughty Ferry in Dundee when it was struck by a large stone at around 5.10pm on Thursday.

It smashed the windscreen and hit the driver, who suffered injuries to his neck.

A female passenger had to be taken to hospital for treatment after glass got into her eye, while other passengers were showered with glass.

Police have appealed for information about the “potentially extremely dangerous incident”, which affected the Ninewells to Carnoustie service as it passed Orchar Park on Monifieth Road.

No descriptions of the person or persons responsible are currently available, although officers are checking CCTV on the bus.

In a statement, the force said: “The potential consequences of this incident could have been horrendous had the driver been struck in the head and the bus then crashed.

“Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured on this occasion, but the outcome could potentially have been far worse.”

A spokeswoman for Stagecoach said: “This kind of behaviour is potentially dangerous and totally unacceptable.

“We are assisting police with their inquiries into this incident and will help them in any way we can to track down those responsible.”
