A variety of events are set to take place in South Somerset over the next week.

Crewkerne

The Caprice of Fancy – Emma-Marie Kabanova and Colin Thompson

A classical music concert inspired by Niccolò Paganini is set to take place in Crewkerne this weekend.

Musicians Colin Thompson and Emma-Marie Kabanova will present The Caprice of Fancy at the South Somerset Music Centre on Sunday, August 23.

The concert is scheduled from 3pm to 4pm.

The recital will feature solo and duet pieces by Paganini, as well as works by his contemporaries including Filippo Gragnani, Fernando Sor, Christian Gottlieb Scheidler, and Ludwig van Beethoven.

The programme aims to provide a glimpse into early 19th-century music.

Ilminster

Ilminster Arts Centre Exhibitions

Ilminster Arts Centre is staging two exhibitions showcasing 'hidden depths' and an abstract perspective on life.

Nancy Marrows' display, titled Hidden Depths, features layered artworks depicting human and nature interactions.

The works, which show different perspectives when viewed from different orientations, are on display in the Cafe Gallery.

Three local artists, Ksenia Cieslak, Richard Pearson, and Rosaria Valenti, join forces to present Life through Abstraction, utilising diverse mediums to explore emotion, identity, and personal experiences.

Both exhibitions are open between 9.30am and 3pm, Tuesday to Saturday, with free entry for all visitors, until Friday, August 28.

Ricky Romain Plays Sitar

Renowned sitar player Ricky Romain will perform in Ilminster this week.

Mr Romain, celebrated for his mastery of North Indian classical music, will perform at The Millhouse on Friday, August 21, at 7.30pm.

Having begun his musical journey in 1972, Romain studied under Punita Gupta, a direct disciple of the legendary Ravi Shankar.

His rich, improvisational style will be showcased within the intimate setting of the venue.

South Petherton

Acoustic Night

An acoustic night showcasing local talent is set to take place in South Petherton.

The event, at The David Hall on Sunday, August 23, encourages performers across diverse genres, providing them with an opportunity to shine on a professional stage.

The organisers also hope the night will attract more audience members, offering an evening full of "talent and variety".

Performances have included a broad range from music and poetry to dance and even bagpipes.

Though entry is free, donations are requested to cover the cost of heating and lighting the hall.

The event starts at 7.30pm and will run until 10.30pm.

Yeovil

Puccini’s Turandot on Sydney Harbour

Puccini's Turandot on Sydney Harbour is set to be screened in Yeovil this week.

This opera show, famous for its elaborate sets such as a 25-metre dragon and 20-metre pagoda, will be shown at Westlands Entertainment Venue on Thursday, August 20, at 2.30pm and 7pm.

The production, directed by Chen Shi-Zheng, also features Chinese acrobatics and contemporary cinema.

It stars Dragana Radakovic as Turandot and Riccardo Massi as Calaf and is renowned for its performance of Nessun Dorma.

Ticket prices range from £11 to £16, including a £1.50 levy, with an additional £2 transaction fee for all bookings.

National Emergency Briefing – A Film by Chris Packham

A screening of Chris Packham's film is coming to Yeovil this weekend.

The screening of National Emergency Briefing, running for 50 minutes, takes place at the Swan Theatre on Sunday, August 23.

Entry is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance.

It highlights the climate and nature crisis - and its impacts on everything from national security to food supply.

Mr Packham’s documentary aims to build support for a televised government emergency briefing and a large-scale national response.

Doors will open at 6.30pm, with the screening beginning at 7pm.
