A303 closed between Crewkerne and Ilminster after crash

THE A303 was fully closed by emergency services, and two people were hospitalised after a serious collision involving two cars occurred between Crewkerne and Ilminster.

At around 4.30pm on Sunday, March 22, emergency services, including Avon and Somerset Police, South Western Ambulance Service, and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, were called to a serious crash that occurred on the A303 between the A356 (Crewkerne) and the A358 (Ilminster).

According to National Highways, the road was closed in both directions while emergency services responded, and recovery works took place.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said they were called at 4.36pm and sent four appliances between Southfields and South Petherton.

They confirmed that two vehicles were involved in the crash, with one on its side and a woman still inside that vehicle, the fire service confirmed.

They said a man had been removed from the other vehicle before their arrival and was being treated by paramedics.

The spokesperson said: "The vehicle on its side was in a ditch, so firefighters stabilised the vehicle and, after the woman was assessed by paramedics.

"[We] extricated the casualty using hydraulic rescue equipment."

On the morning of Monday, March 23, the ambulance service confirmed that two people were taken to Yeovil District Hospital by ambulance following the crash.

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 16:34hrs on Sunday, March 22, to a road traffic collision near South Petherton.

“We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, an operations officer, and a doctor to the scene. We conveyed two patients by land ambulance to Yeovil District Hospital.”

Avon and somerset Police confirmed that the people involved in the crash did not sustain life-threatening injuries.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Emergency services were at the scene of a collision involving two vehicles on the A303 between Southfields Roundabout, Ilminster, and South Petherton, which was reported to us at around 4.30pm yesterday (Sunday 22 March).

 “Two people, a man and a woman, have suffered injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

“The road was closed in both directions but has since reopened.”
