THE owners of a pub near Ilminster have said they are “honoured” after it was named one of the best in Britain.
The Barrington Boar, in Barrington, placed 12th in The Good Food Guide’s list of the Top 100 Best Pubs in Britain, published on Wednesday (October 29).
The list celebrates the nation’s “thriving appetite for genuine pubs with proper food and proper beer – and the growing number of venues that are delivering it.”

Since taking over The Barrington Boar in June 2018, husband-and-wife team Alasdair Clifford and Victoria Collins have established it as a contemporary pub and restaurant, as well as a bed and breakfast.
Responding to being named in the list, Victoria, posting on social media, said: “Wow, what news to wake up to – number 12.
“Thank you to all those who nominated us. This is a testament to our superstar team who we couldn’t do it without, including The Barrington Bakery team.
“It’s an honour to be on this list and a joy to see so many other South West pubs on it too.”
The kitchen is headed by Clifford, who grew up locally and has over a decade of experience in Michelin-starred restaurants such as Chez Bruce and The Glasshouse.

The Barrington Boar was listed in the 2024 Top 50 Gastropubs (ranked #35) and has also been recognised by the MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland 2023, The Good Food Guide, Harden’s Guide, and the Trencherman’s Guide.
The menu highlights locally sourced, seasonal ingredients from nearby farmers, foragers, brewers, and cheesemongers.
The bar serves a range of South West products, including regional ales, ciders, craft beers, gins, and English sparkling wines.
The property also includes four bed and breakfast rooms, converted from a former skittle alley and overlooking the garden.
The Good Food Guide was established in 1951 and publishes its top 100 list annually – this year in partnership with Timothy Taylor’s Landlord and supported by Tracklements and Koffmann’s Potatoes.
Editor of The Good Food Guide, Chloë Hamilton, said: “We went searching for the pubs that nail the drinking and dining side of the equation.
“It turns out the harder you look the more you find, and they’re not all hidden away in the Cotswolds. The Highland Laddie – a city-centre slam dunk – is a very good case in point.”
