A Somerset-based charity is calling on residents to offer their homes to those with care needs.
Shared Lives South West, based in Ilminster, is making this appeal during Shared Lives Week, which runs nationally from Monday, June 23 to Friday, June 27.
The charity has been operating for more than 20 years, supporting hundreds of carers who welcome people with learning disabilities, autism, mental health conditions, or age-related illnesses like dementia into their homes.
Shared Lives South West is now seeking more carers to join its community.
Amanda Maggs, team leader at Shared Lives South West, said: "Our mission is to match individuals with carers who can provide a home-based, person-centred approach.
"Carers come from all walks of life—retirees, families, working professionals—but they all share the desire to make a difference.
"It’s flexible, you work from home, and you’re never alone—we’re with you every step of the way."
Carers can offer either short breaks or full-time care, creating a nurturing, family-style environment that supports independence and personal growth.
This arrangement is similar to adult fostering, and carers are paid for their role.
The charity's model is built on flexibility, with each arrangement tailored to meet the individual's needs and preferences.
This creates a unique and empowering support system based on trust, respect, and shared living.

One such success story is Mollie, who has been living with her carer, Mae Playdell-Pearce, in Somerset.
Mollie has flourished since joining Mae, going on holiday, passing her driving test, graduating, and now working in engineering.
Mae said: "You’re not doing things for someone—you’re equipping and empowering them with tools to live their life their way.
"It takes patience and compassion, and it’s incredibly rewarding."
Shared Lives South West currently supports nearly 500 people across Somerset, Devon, and Cornwall.
