A MOTORIST from Ilminster was caught driving at almost double the speed limit.

Scott Murray, 32, of Canal Way, was clocked doing 76mph on a 40mph stretch of the B3168 at Westport, Langport.

After he pleaded guilty to speeding, Taunton Magistrates' Court was told he committed the offence on June 1 last year.

Murray was fined £540 and ordered to pay a £216 victim surcharge, along with a contribution of £85 towards costs.

His driving licence was endorsed with six penalty points.

The court ruled that he must pay his total court bill of £841 by February 7.
