A TEENAGER from Ilton has been chosen as the St John Ambulance District Cadet of the Year 2024.

Corporal Sami Bowen, 15, who attend Holyrood School, in Chard, was selected following a competition day involving cadets from Somerset, Avon and Bristol.

Sami, who is a member of Ilton Cadet Unit, will go forward to represent the district at the national competition in February, where she will be in with a chance of being crowned Regional (South West) and National Cadet of the Year.

She won the district title after giving a presentation, completing team tasks, debating, lunching with the judges and an individual interview to a panel of four judges, as well as completing a first aid test.

It was an intense day where everyone was out of their comfort zone at some point during the day.

Ilton Cadet Unit manager Sue Winter said: "I am a one very proud unit manager.

"This is the first time that Ilton Cadets have had a cadet win this prestigious title and to be able to represent her district and the unit at the next round.

"Sami has been a cadet with Ilton Cadets since 2019. She is a Cadet First Aider and a young leader.

"We wish Sami an amazing year being an ambassador for Ilton Cadets and St John Ambulance throughout the county and further afield."
