PUPILS at Herne View School in Ilminster have been reflecting on Remembrance Day after a visit from Mr Sanders, a poet who has brought together several anthologies of war poems.
Following his visit where he shared poems and images, the pupils have written their own poems which have gone on display at the front of both school sites and in the school hall after the Civic Remembrance Service at the Minster.
Year 6 pupils have also led their own Remembrance Service at the war memorial on the grounds of the old Adult Education building at Ditton Street.
This commemorates those who died in the First World War who attended the school which was in this building and children read out a list of their names so they will be remembered.
One of the school pupils played ‘The Last Post’ which was a very moving part of the service.
Two pupils, both from service families represented the school in laying wreaths at both the Ditton St war memorial and at the Minster and pupils were privileged to join the Ilminster Town Council in laying poppies on the war grave in Ilminster Cemetery.
A spokesperson for the school said: “We have been very impressed with how our pupils have shared their reflections of Remembrance.
“It is important we help this generation carry on understanding the meaning behind the Remembrance Day services and the poppies as they also reflect on the conflicts that are still ongoing in their world today.”
