A MAN from Ilminster is among the fire service’s new recruits.

Devon and Somerset Rescue Service welcomed Michael Peach as one of their latest on-call firefighters.

The group of firefighters recently completed an acquisition course and are now “on the run”, the service confirmed.

On-call firefighters do the same emergency work as wholetime firefighters, but they can also have other jobs too. While on duty, they carry a pager, which activates when they need to attend an incident, the service explained.

A message from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “Congratulations to our latest on-call firefighter recruits who have completed their acquisition course and are 'on the run.'

“Left to right are Michael Peach, Ilminster; Ryan Tucker, Danes Castle Exeter; George Hilliard, Torquay, and Finley Forman, Minehead.”

A message shared by the service on its official website said: “We have temporarily paused our on-call firefighter recruitment until the Autumn.

“However, we are encouraging people who are interested in joining to contact us now, meet your local crew, and learn more about what becoming an on-call firefighter would involve.

“For more information, express your interest (https://www.dsfire.gov.uk/careers/vacancies/express-your-interest-being-kept-date-call-firefighter-recruitment-process) or visit your local on-call fire station on their drill night. Details for each station are listed on the ‘Our fire stations’ (https://www.dsfire.gov.uk/about-us/fire-stations) page of our website.

“Most of our fire stations are crewed by on-call firefighters.
