UPDATE: The tree has now been cleared and the path has re-opened.

A FALLEN tree has blocked a path at the main entrance to Herne Hill near Ilminster, forcing it to close “in the interest of public safety”.

A diversion is in place for users of the woodland, which remains accessible to the public from the Donyatt side and through Britten’s field.

Pictures show that the top branches of a large tree have fallen across the track but it is still attached at the trunk, causing public safety concerns.

On Monday, an Ilminster Town Council spokesperson said: “A large tree had fallen across the path on the main entrance to Herne Hill on Sunday, August 28.

“The fallen tree is still attached at the trunk and poses a significant risk. Therefore, the path has been closed in the interest of public safety.

“Herne Hill is still accessible from the Donyatt side as well as the path at the far end of Britten’s field.

“A tree surgeon is due on Tuesday (August 30), and the paths will be re-opened as soon as possible after that.

“Many thanks to the member of the public who reported it.”

The 28-acre Herne Hill site is owned by Ilminster Town Council and is popular among local dog walkers.
