CHILDREN at Greenfylde First School in Ilminster learnt about food production and the world around them in Fairtrade Fortnight.

This year's Fairtrade Fortnight took place between February 21 and March 6.

The annual event encourages individuals, schools, companies, and groups from across the UK to share the stories of the people who produce our food, cotton, and other resources, but are often exploited and underpaid.

Greenfylde First School's pupils played games and took part in other activities and creative tasks that followed the 'choose the world you want' theme.

This encouraged them to think about where their food comes from and what is needed for producers to make enough to feed the entire planet.

They also thought about the differences between what people in the world want compared to what they actually need.

Greenfylde headteacher Claire Oaten said: "Our pupils are the future citizens and decision makers in our world, so it’s important we encourage them at an early age to appreciate and understand the world around them.

"Being the local Iminster school on the Ilminster Fairtrade Committee, we want to support our children in understanding about a fairer future world.

"Fairtrade Fortnight, with the activities in school and other opportunities such as the Fairtrade town trail competition, allows us to do this in a fun and meaningful way for the children."

The children’s work from Fairtrade Fortnight is on display in the showcase window of the Ilminster Emporium in Silver Street for two weeks.
